Creating a source segment

Segment by source

Creating a segment based on source will help you to identify your customers based where they first signed up or purchased from.

Since the source field is mandatory within Websand you'll always have that information within your platform.

Source based segments are really important to help you understand which sources of acquisition perform the best for you. Not just in terms of number of new customers, but also in terms of the customer lifetime value they generate.

Once you truly understand where your best customers are coming from, you can change your acquisition planning and budget and make sure you sign up only the most fabulous and valuable customers from now on.

Creating a source Segment

Select Segment from the Menu

Hit the [+ new segment] button in the top right corner of the screen.

Select Source from the dropdown segment type list

Click the 'Create Segment' button and that will bring you into the Source Segment screen.

You are then presented with the following options.

1. NAME YOUR SEGMENT.

Use a name you and your peers can easily understand for your segment, for example - "Source = Landing Page"

2. SELECT YOUR SOURCE

Choose the relevant source code from the available dropdown list.

The list will only show the source options that are held within your data.  So if you have a new source, you need at least one entry for that source option to be added to the source segment selection options.

3. SELECT THE TIME SCALE FOR THE SEGMENT

Once you've selected your source, you can then filter the segment based on the date of the the customer or subscriber first signed up.

Select from

  • Ever
  • Signups for with that source in the last [number] of days
  • Signups with that source code that have been recorded within a specific date range - between [date] and [date].

4. HIT THE CREATE BUTTON.

Boom!  You've just created a new segment to help you manage your audience.

From that day forth (until you decide otherwise), your customers will be segmented accordingly.

What's next?  Here are some options.

You could simply monitor this segment (keep an eye on the growth or shrinkage).

You could combine this segment with another segment and create a 'super-powered segment'.

You could use this segment to send a one off marketing message

Or, you could use this segment power some follow up marketing automation - source is a great segment for Welcome campaigns.
